I had curly ginger hair when I was a toddler but then it changed into straight light brown-
It's light brown in the winter and caramel brown with blondish highlights in the summer
I never did dye my hair tho-

If it was me, (in my opinion) I would be honest with them or prefer to give something cheaper or DIY. ( ngl not something like 5 min crafts-) Because what matters is that you've tried to get/make something for them. This small gift will show how much you value them. If they don't understand the emotional meaning of this, I would have treated them just like they treated me.
You can just try to show affection to them, that's what actually matters <3
