Recall the past ways the students used to be punished
Argus Filch is the Hogwarts caretaker. He is a Squib, a fact he tries to keep secret from the students. He has a very loyal cat, Mrs Norris, which aids him in his duties of keeping up the rules in the school. Filch's knowledge of the school's secret passageways is second to only that of Fred and George Weasley. He is in a constant war with Peeves the Poltergeist and also Hogwarts Students.
Argus Filch is the caretaker at Hogwarts. Pale and cantankerous, with bulging, lamp-like eyes, his knowledge of the castle’s secret passageways helps him to catch rule-breakers. The students detest him.
Mr Filch has extended his list of objects forbidden at Hogwarts to include Screaming Yo-yos, Fanged Frisbees and Ever-Bashing Boomerangs. The full list can be viewed in his office, and has four hundred and thirty-seven items on it.
On the night that the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang delegates arrive Filch stands unnoticed in a far corner of the Great Hall. At Professor Dumbledore's request, Filch approaches the staff table carrying a great old wooden chest, encrusted with jewels. He places the chest carefully on the table before Dumbledore.
Filch arrives at the foot of the staircase with Mrs Norris soon after Harry drops the golden egg. He is convinced that Peeves is responsible for the racket. He sees Harry's golden egg lying at the foot of the stairs and picks it up, closing the object to stop the wailing noise. He gleefully believes that Peeves must have stolen the egg from one of the Triwizard champions, and is determined to find the poltergeist. He climbs the staircase, getting closer and closer to Harry, Mrs Norris at his heels. Filch stops a few steps below Harry when Professor Snape arrives, turning and explaining the situation to the teacher. When Snape asks him to help find the wizard who he thinks broke into his office, Filch looks yearningly up the stairs, reluctant to abandon his search for Peeves. He knows that Professor Dumbledore will have to listen to him this time, as he believes Peeves has stolen from a student. He explains the situation to Professor Moody when he arrives, clutching the golden egg to his chest as he speaks. He is reluctant to relinquish the egg to Professor Moody, as he believes it is evidence of Peeves's treachery. He eventually gives Moody the egg, and disappears down the corridor, muttering to Mrs Norris as he goes.
Filch arrives at Professor Slughorn's party dragging Draco Malfoy by the ear. His jowls quiver and there is a maniacal light in his eyes as he tells Professor Slughorn that he discovered Draco lurking in the corridor upstairs, claiming to have been invited to the party. He is thrilled that Draco is in trouble after finding out the boy was not invited, knowing that night-time wandering around the school has been forbidden by the Headmaster. He is outraged and disappointed when Professor Slughorn allows Draco to remain at the party without any punishment and shuffles away, muttering under his breath.
