Arthur Weasley is Ron's father and husband to Molly Weasley. He works at the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office at the Ministry of Magic. He loves anything to do with Muggles.

Introduction[]

Arthur Weasley is Ron’s father. He and his wife Molly have seven children, all with the same flaming red hair. Fascinated by Muggle technology, Arthur works in the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office at the Ministry of Magic and intervenes when Muggle objects are illegally bewitched. Despite this, he often experiments with bewitching Muggle objects himself, such as the Ford Anglia which he has enchanted in order to expand the interior and make it fly.

From the Story[]

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets[]

Discovered in chapter 3, The Burrow[]

Arthur is thin and balding, and when Harry first meets him he is worn out from going on night-time raids for the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. He is excited when he discovers that his sons flew his enchanted car, until his wife Molly Weasley indicates her disapproval.

Discovered in chapter 4, At Flourish and Blotts[]

Along with the rest of his family, Arthur prepares to travel to Diagon Alley using Floo powder. Arthur is intrigued when Harry mentions the London Underground but Mrs Weasley cuts him off before he can ask too many questions about it.

Whilst buying school supplies in Diagon Alley, Arthur is delighted to meet Hermione’s Muggle parents and insists on taking them for a drink.

Arthur gets into an altercation with Lucius Malfoy in Flourish and Blotts bookshop after Lucius Malfoy taunts the Weasley family for being poor and for associating with Muggles.

Discovered in chapter 5, The Whomping Willow[]

With Harry and the family running late for the Hogwarts Express, Arthur tries unsuccessfully to persuade his wife to let him use the Invisibility Booster in the enchanted Ford Anglia so that they can fly unseen to King’s Cross.

Discovered in chapter 12, The Polyjuice Potion[]

After an enquiry at the Ministry of Magic, Arthur is fined fifty Galleons for enchanting the Ford Anglia. Lucius calls for Arthur’s resignation and attacks his Muggle Protection Act.

Discovered in chapter 18, Dobby's Reward[]

Arthur travels to Hogwarts with Molly when Ginny is taken into the Chamber of Secrets. He is overjoyed when Harry and Ron bring Ginny back alive, although he chastises her for not realising that Tom Riddle’s diary contained Dark Magic.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban[]

Discovered in chapter 22, Owl Post Again[]

Ron tells Harry that Arthur is usually able to get tickets for the Quidditch World Cup, through his job at the Ministry of Magic. Arthur is waiting at King's Cross station with his wife when the students arrive on the Hogwarts Express.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire[]

Discovered in chapter 4, Back to the Burrow[]

Arthur arranges for the fireplace at Number 4, Privet Drive to be connected to the Floo Network for an afternoon, so that they can come and collect Harry. He is forced to blast through the fireplace after they are trapped behind it, having not realised that the fireplace was boarded up. Arthur attempts to make conversation with the Dursleys, and apologises for having to blast through their wall. He tells them that he can repair the fireplace before he Disapparates.

Arthur is confused when the Dursleys ignore Harry's goodbye, and is mildly indignant when they show no signs of replying to their nephew. When Dudley eats one of Fred's dropped sweets and his tongue starts swelling, Arthur tries to calm the Dursleys down, and tells them that he can easily correct the Engorgement Charm placed on Dudley's tongue. Arthur tells Harry to leave, dodging the ornaments that Vernon angrily starts to throw at him, and attempts to sort the situation out.

Discovered in chapter 5, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes[]

Arthur is furious with Fred and George for dropping the Ton-Tongue Toffee in the Dursleys living room, and is certain that they did it on purpose, knowing that Dudley wouldn't be able to resist eating it. He threatens to tell Molly about the incident, but hesitates when she overhears him, having never actually intended to tell her. Arthur eventually informs Molly about the incident, after Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny have left the kitchen.

During dinner, Arthur listens to Percy talk about his report on standardising cauldron thickness. When Percy begins to talk about the lack of support his department has had from the Department of Magical Games and Sports, Arthur interrupts; he tells Percy that Ludo Bagman was the one who got the Weasleys such good tickets for the World Cup. Arthur did a favour for Ludo's brother, Otto, by smoothing things over after Otto got into trouble regarding a lawn-mower with unnatural powers. Arthur knows that Ludo is not concerned about the disappearance of Bertha Jorkins, but says that if she were a member of his department, he would be worried by now.

Discovered in chapter 6, The Portkey[]

Attempting to travel to the Quidditch World Cup 'incognito' as a Muggle, Arthur is dressed in a golf jumper and a pair of very old jeans, which are held up with a thick leather belt.

Arthur leads the way to Stoatshead Hill, where the nearest Portkey is located. As they walk, Arthur tells Harry all about the travel arrangements the Ministry has had to make for the impending Quidditch match. The group arrive on Stoatshead Hill ten minutes before they are due to depart, and Arthur instructs them to look for the Portkey. He is hailed by Amos Diggory, who has found the object, and leads the others over to greet him.

Arthur is uncomfortable as the conversation turns to the Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff the previous year, and quickly tells everyone to gather around the Portkey, ready for their departure. Arthur, Amos and Cedric are the only ones in the group who remain standing after the Portkey delivers them to the misty moor.

Discovered in chapter 7, Bagman and Crouch[]

Arthur has booked two tent spaces in a campsite about a quarter of a mile away from where the Portkey delivered them. He struggles to understand Muggle money, inadvertantly drawing the attention of the Muggle site manager, Mr Roberts, who asks if he is a foreigner. He is nervous when Mr Roberts starts to talk about the large number of strange people visiting the site.

Arthur leads the rest of the group through the campsite towards their reserved pitch spaces. He is pleased by their location, as the Quidditch stadium is just on the other side of the woods, and they are as close as it is possible to be from their campsite. He asks Harry for help erecting the tents, as he is determined to put them up by hand, as a Muggle would. Arthur enters the boys' tent first, and is worried that they might be a bit cramped in the three-roomed tent. He borrowed the tent from a man at his office, Perkins, who doesn't camp much anymore. Arthur sends Harry, Hermione and Ron off to the water tap to fetch some for the group, and goes to collect firewood with the rest of his family.

Arthur struggles to light the fire by Muggle means; splintered matches litter the ground around him when the trio return, but he looks as though he is having the time of his life. As the evening progresses, he keeps up a running commentary about the wizards who pass their tent, mainly for Harry and Hermione's benefit. He waves and grins when Ludo Bagman arrives at their tent, and introduces him to everyone. He takes up Ludo's offer to place a bet on the match, offering a Galleon on Ireland to win. He is uncomfortable when the twins bet all their savings on Ireland winning with Krum catching the Snitch, but looks on helplessly as Ludo accepts their wager. As they enjoy a cup of tea together, Arthur tentatively suggests to Ludo that he begin a search for Bertha Jorkins, but is rebuffed just before Barty Crouch joins them.

Mr Weasley buys an Irish flag from one of the vendors at the campsite. When a deep, booming gong sounds beyond the woods near the campsite, he becomes very excited, and tells the group it is time to go to the stadium.

Discovered in chapter 8, The Quidditch World Cup[]

Mr Weasley leads the group into the woods, following the lantern-lit trail. As they approach the Quidditch Stadium, he tells Harry about the Ministry's preparations for the World Cup. The party enter the nearest entrance, and climb further and further up the stairs, towards the Top Box where they will be sitting.

Arthur is intrigued to see what mascots the two Quidditch teams have brought with them; when he sees the Veela enter the stadium, he whips off his glasses and polishes them hurriedly on his robes. He is amused after the Veela stop their performance; smiling slightly, he tugs Ron's hat, which Ron had been absent-mindedly destroying, out of his hands. The next time the Veela start to perform, Arthur tells the boys to put their fingers in their ears, to keep their minds on the game.

Discovered in chapter 9, The Dark Mark[]

Arthur asks the twins not to tell Molly about their wager with Ludo Bagman. He seems curious about their 'big plans' for the money they have won, but ultimately decides that he doesn't want to know what the plans are. He joins the others in the tent after the victory, arguing enjoyably about the match and talking to Charlie about cobbing. He only insists that everyone goes to bed after Ginny falls asleep in her hot chocolate.

Arthur wakes everyone urgently when the events at the campsite escalate. He tells the boys to grab a jacket and get outside, and fetches Ginny and Hermione. He instructs the children to get into the woods, and to stick together, and says that he will come and fetch them when things have died down. After the Dark Mark is conjured, Arthur is horrified to see several Ministry wizards attempting to Stun Harry, Ron and Hermione, and hurries over to help them.

Discovered in chapter 10, Mayhem at the Ministry[]

Arthur wakes everyone after they have had a couple of hours sleep, and magically packs up the tents. They leave the campsite as quickly as possible, passing a dazed Mr Roberts on the way. Arthur tells the group that Roberts will be alright eventually, but that having had such a big memory modified by the Ministry officials will leave him a bit disorientated for a while. When they arrive at the spot where the Portkeys lie, they see a number of witches and wizards gathered around Basil. Mr Weasley has a hurried discussion with Basil, and the group are able to join the queue and get a Portkey back to Stoatshead Hill.

When the group arrive at The Burrow, Arthur is immediately accosted by Molly, who flings her arms around him. He soothes his wife, telling her that they are all okay, and leads her back towards the house. He tells Bill to pick up the discarded Daily Prophet, as he wants to know what has been said about the events at the Quidditch World Cup. Arthur insists on adding a shot of Ogdens Old Firewhisky to Molly's tea, to help with her shock. He is disappointed but unsurprised as he reads an article that blames the dangerous events in the campsite on the Ministry of Magic and its lax security; his eyes widen as he realises that he is mentioned in the article, although not by name. Arthur tells Molly he will have to go into the office, as his innocent statement that nobody was hurt in the woods has made the situation worse, and will take some smoothing over. He goes to change his robes, and leaves for the Ministry.

Neither Arthur nor Percy are at home much over the following week; both leave the house each morning well before the rest of the family are awake, and return after dinner every night. On the Sunday before the children are due to return to Hogwarts, Arthur arrives in the kitchen at The Burrow, having been at work. Molly says Arthur hasn't had to work on the weekends since the days when You-Know-Who was in power. He looks completely exhausted as he walks into the living room, carrying his dinner on a tray. He tells them that Rita Skeeter has discovered that Bertha Jorkins is missing, and expects to see the news in the Daily Prophet the next day. He is irritated when Percy starts to talk about Barty Crouch's thoughts on the matter, and tells them that Crouch is lucky that Rita hasn't heard about Winky being found with the wand that conjured the Dark Mark.

Discovered in chapter 11, Aboard the Hogwarts Express[]

Arthur receives an urgent message from the Ministry just before they are due to leave for Kings Cross Station. He talks to Amos Diggory via the Floo Network, bending over the fireplace to speak to him, and frantically makes notes about the incident at Mad-Eye Moody's home. Arthur is the only one who can get the charges dropped against Moody, and is needed urgently. Within five minutes of receiving the call Arthur is ready to leave The Burrow, and Disapparates away.

Discovered in chapter 13, Mad-Eye Moody[]

Arthur is mentioned in an article in The Daily Prophet by Rita Skeeter. The article criticises him for rushing to help Alastor Moody after the incident at his house the previous day. According to the article, Arthur was forced to modify several memories before he was able to escape from the Muggle policemen.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix[]

Discovered in chapter 4, Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place[]

Fred and George tell Harry that Arthur and Percy had a huge row over the summer. Just before the Weasleys left The Burrow for Grimmauld Place, Percy arrived with the news that he had been promoted to Junior Assistant to the Minister. Arthur suspected that Fudge only promoted Percy to spy on Arthur, knowing that he is friendly with Albus Dumbledore, and told this to his son.

Discovered in chapter 6, The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black[]

According to Sirius, he and Arthur are second cousins once removed.

Discovered in chapter 7, The Ministry of Magic[]

Arthur takes Harry to the Ministry of Magic for his hearing. Arthur is dressed in Muggle clothing for the hearing; a pair of pinstripe trousers and an old bomber jacket. The pair leave earlier than necessary, as Arthur thinks it better for them to be at the Ministry than hanging around at Grimmauld Place. As they walk towards the tube station, Arthur tells Harry that he usually Apparates to the Ministry, but that he thinks it best they arrive in a thoroughly non-magical fashion, given the nature of the disciplinary hearing. He keeps his hand inside his jacket pocket, clenched around his wand, as they walk through the run-down streets near Grimmauld Place.

Arthur is fascinated by the Muggle ticket machines at the underground station, and thinks the machines are ingenious. Once on the train, he anxiously checks and re-checks the Underground Map above the windows, counting down the stations until they arrive at their destination in the very heart of London. On the busy London street, Arthur takes a minute to work out his bearings, having never walked to the Ministry from the station, nor used the visitors' entrance. He leads Harry down a side road, past increasingly smaller buildings until they finally reach the street. Arthur points brightly at an old red telephone box, and opens the door, following Harry inside and shutting them in. Lifting the telephone receiver, he dials the code 62442, and states his name and business to the witch who answers. The floor of the telephone box shudders and Arthur and Harry sink slowly into the ground, watching as the pavement seems to rise up past the glass windows. After about a minute, the pair arrive in the Atrium of the Ministry of Magic.

Arthur and Harry join the throng of witches and wizards walking through the Atrium, passing the Fountain of Magical Brethren as they walk towards the security desk on the left of the hall. He introduces Harry to the security wizard and waits as his wand is checked. Arthur leads Harry through the golden gates at the end of the Atrium into a smaller hall, and joins the crowds around one of the many lifts. When they arrive at the second level of the Ministry, the home of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, the Auror Headquarters and the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts office, Arthur leads Harry across the floor towards his office. He and Harry encounter Kingsley Shacklebolt as they walk past the Auror Headquarters; Arthur and Kingsley are visibly brusque with each other, both acting as though they hardly know each other, Arthur lowering his voice when inviting Kingsley to dinner at Grimmauld Place so that nobody can overhear. Arthur is handed a sheaf of parchment with an edition of The Quibbler hidden inside it, which he agrees to pass on to Sirius.

Arthur is horrified when Perkins arrives in the office and tells him that Harry's hearing has been brought forwards to 8 o'clock, and that it is now being held in Courtroom Ten. He looks at his watch and lets out a yelp, realising that the hearing started five minutes before. He and Harry leave the office at a run, skidding to a halt by the lifts and jabbing impatiently at the 'down' button. Arthur curses furiously every time the lift stops and pummels the button for level nine. Arthur is angry that they weren't told in advance about the change of location, and doesn't know why the hearing is being held in one of the old courtrooms, which haven't been used for years. Arthur and Harry are forced to exit the lift on level nine, as it doesn't go as far as the courtrooms, and speed down a corridor towards a flight of stairs. When they reach the courtroom, Arthur slumps against the wall, clutching at a stitch in his chest. He is not allowed into the courtroom, so remains outside whilst the hearing commences.
