“ | Dudley has had a most unpleasant summer so far, ever since his parents read his end-of-year school report. Despite his many tantrums, Dudley is forced to eat healthy food by his mother. | ” |
Discovered in chapter 4, Back to the Burrow[]
“ | Dudley looks somewhat diminished on the afternoon the Weasleys are due to arrive at Privet Drive. He is nervous about their visit, as his last encounter with a wizard left him with a curly pig's tail, which had to be removed at a private hospital in London. He constantly runs his hands over his backside, and walks sideways from room to room, so as not to present the same target to the Weasleys.
When the Weasleys arrive through the fireplace at Privet Drive, Dudley flies from the living room, terrified. Hands clamped over his buttocks, he waddles as fast as he can into the kitchen. He reappears in the living room later, gazing at Mr Weasley with terrified eyes, and attempts to conceal himself behind his parents. He whimpers when Arthur speaks to him, and refuses to talk. Dudley eats one of the sweets that drops from Fred Weasley's pocket. He kneels by the coffee table, gagging, as his tongue swells and grows to over a foot long. His tongue is four foot long before the Dursleys allow Mr Weasley to shrink it. |

Discovered in chapter 1, Dudley Demented[]
“ | Dudley and his gang, which includes his friend Piers Polkiss, spend every evening during the summer holidays vandalising the play park, smoking on street corners and throwing stones at passing cars and children. The past year has wrought quite a change in Dudley; although as vast as ever, a year's hard dieting and the discovery of a talent for boxing has altered his physique. Dudley recently became the Junior Heavyweight Inter-School Boxing Champion of the Southeast.
One evening in the summer holidays, Dudley walks down Magnolia Road with the rest of his gang, talking about one of their most recent victims. Dudley leaves the gang as they reach Magnolia Crescent, promising to join them the next day, and heads down the Crescent towards Privet Drive. He is disappointed when he hears his name being called and turns to see Harry. Dudley resists rising to Harry's bait about his new nickname, 'Big D', although the effort of keeping himself from hitting Harry appears to demand all his self-control. A muscle twitches in Dudley's jaw as Harry asks him about the children his gang have been victimising, furious at the jibes. The boys soon turn down the narrow alleyway that joins Magnolia Crescent to Wisteria Walk. The cousins continue to snipe at each other as they walk down the alley, until Dudley reveals that he knows about Harry's nightmares. He wears a strangely triumphant look as he tells Harry that he has heard him talking in his sleep, begging 'Don't kill Cedric!', and calling out to James Potter for help. Dudley backs into the alley wall when Harry draws his wand on him, pointing it at Dudley's heart, and shouts at Harry to point the wand away. Dudley gives an odd, shuddering gasp in the midst of his argument with Harry, as though he has been doused in icy water. He begs Harry to stop whatever it is he is doing, panicking as the alley becomes piercingly cold and they are surrounded by total, impenetrable, silent darkness. Dudley is unable to see anything, and assumes that it is all Harry's doing. He punches Harry in the side of the head, lifting his cousin off his feet, and blunders away, stumbling into the alley fence as he attempts to leave. Seconds later he gives a horrible, squealing yell and stops moving down the alley. When Harry's wand lights upon Dudley, he is curled up on the ground, his arms clamped over his face, with a Dementor crouching over him, lowering it's head at Dudley's face. Dudley is saved from the Dementors' Kiss by Harry's Patronus, which forces the Dementor away. Dudley remains on the ground, whimpering and shaking, as Mrs Figg comes running into sight. |
