Hogwarts' Entrance Hall

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a school for young wizards and witches that is in Britain, and most British and Irish witches go there. It is considered one of the best wizarding schools. It is also where most of the Harry Potter stories take place.

Introduction[]

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a boarding school for young witches and wizards, located several hours north of London by train. It is over a thousand years old and was founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, after whom the school's four houses are named. The Headmaster is Professor Dumbledore, and the Deputy Headmistress is Professor McGonagall.

From the Story[]

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone[]

Discovered in chapter 7, The Sorting Hat[]

Hogwarts is a vast stone castle with many turrets and towers. It sits high on a cliff, overlooking the grounds, a lake and a forest. The ceiling of the Great Hall, where the students and staff gather for meals and other events, is bewitched to look like the sky outside.

Students are sorted into houses the first night they arrive at school by putting on the Sorting Hat, a bewitched hat that decides where each person is best suited. Each house at Hogwarts has a house ghost as well as dormitories and a common room. Professor McGonagall is the Head of Gryffindor, Professor Snape is the Head of Slytherin, Professor Flitwick is the Head of Ravenclaw, and Professor Sprout is the Head of Hufflepuff.

Discovered in chapter 8, The Potions Master[]

The school has a hundred and forty-two staircases, some of which lead to different places on different days. The expansive grounds, which lead to the Forbidden Forest, include Herbology greenhouses, a broomshed and a lake as well as a Quidditch pitch. Astronomy classes takes place on the tallest tower, while the Potions classes take place deep in the cold dungeons. The halls are said to hide many secret passageways, and feature portraits that speak and move (and sometimes leave their frames to visit each other).

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets[]

Discovered in chapter 9, The Writing on the Wall[]

The four Hogwarts founders built the castle over a thousand years ago, far from Muggle eyes, and began to bring together young witches and wizards to receive magical education.

However, Salazar Slytherin believed that Hogwarts should accept only students from magical families, while the other founders welcomed Muggle-born students. Unable to reconcile their differences, Slytherin quarrelled with Godric Gryffindor before leaving the school forever.

Legend has it that before he left Salazar Slytherin had built a hidden chamber deep withing Hogwarts, called the Chamber of Secrets. The legend says that the Chamber can only be opened by Slytherin's rightful heir, who would then be able to unleash the monster inside to hunt Muggle-borns.

Discovered in chapter 11, The Duelling Club[]

According to Hogwarts: A History, the Hogwarts castle is hidden from the outside world. If a Muggle looks at the castle, all they see is a mouldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire[]

Discovered in chapter 15, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang[]

The Hogwarts castle goes through an extra-thorough cleaning in preparation for the Triwizard Tournament. Several grimy portraits have been scrubbed, to the displeasure of their subjects, and the suits of armour gleam and move without squeaking.
