The Ministry of Magic is the wizards' government. They have their offices in London, somewhere underground. Visitors can reach the Ministry through a red phone box. There are seven departments; each department has several sub-departments. For instance, the Department of Magical Law Enforcment has the Auror Office as a sub-department.
The Ministry of Magic is a governing body for wizards. The Ministry issues Harry with a warning for using magic outside of school; Mafalda Hopkirk from the Improper Use of Magic Office writes that Harry may be expelled if he does it again.
It is possible to Apparate into the Ministry of Magic, but there are other ways of entering. The visitors' entrance to the Ministry of Magic is located on a street containing several shabby-looking offices, a pub and an overflowing skip, inside an old red telephone box. Once inside the telephone box, the visitor uses the old-fashioned telephone dial to input a code, 62442. A voice then sounds in the telephone box, asking the visitor to state their name and business with the Ministry. A badge is presented to the visitor, to attach to the front of their robes. Once this has occurred, the telephone box sinks into the ground, the pavement seeming to rise up past the glass windows until darkness surrounds it. It takes around a minute for the descent to complete, the telephone box eventually landing at the end of the long and splendid Atrium of the Ministry of Magic.
The Ministry has over nine floors, most of which are accessible by the lifts located in the small hall at the end of the Atrium. The departments of the Ministry include the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, the Department of International Magical Co-operation, the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and the Department of Magical Transportation. The ninth level of the Ministry - which is the last level to be accessible by lift - houses the Department of Mysteries.
