Neville Longbottom is a first-year Gryffindor. He is a round-faced, forgetful and often picked-upon student.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Discovered in chapter 7, The Sorting Hat

Neville’s family believed he was non-magical for a long time. Neville, who was raised by his grandmother, says he only showed his first signs of magic when his great uncle accidentally dropped him out of a window. Instead of being injured, he bounced down the garden and into the road.

Discovered in chapter 9, The Midnight Duel

Before the first-years’ first flying lesson, the accident-prone Neville had never been allowed on a broomstick. When the lesson begins, he takes off too fast and falls, breaking his wrist and requiring attention from the school nurse. He returns that evening but cannot get into Gryffindor Tower because the Fat Lady had gone on a night-time visit and left the painting; he then follows Harry, Ron and Hermione to the supposed duel between Harry and Draco. The group discovers that Draco has set them up to be caught by Filch, and while running from the caretaker they stumble upon the out-of-bounds third-floor corridor and the monstrous three-headed dog guarding it. Neville, petrified, brings the large creature to the attention of Harry and the rest of the group.

Discovered in chapter 13, Nicolas Flamel

Draco curses Neville using the Leg-Locker curse, leaving Neville’s legs stuck together; he has to bunny hop from the library to the Gryffindor common room, where Hermione performs a counter-curse. At the next Quidditch match, Neville, encouraged by Harry, stands up for himself when insulted, insisting he’s worth twelve of Draco. The Slytherin laugh and continue to taunt him until Ron, fed up, hits Draco. Neville hesitates but then climbs over his seat to help Ron, attempting to take on Crabbe and Goyle by himself. He ends up unconscious in the hospital wing.

Discovered in chapter 15, The Forbidden Forest

On the night that Harry and Hermione take Norbert to the tallest tower, Neville finds out that his friends are in danger of being caught and attempts to warn them. Instead, he gets caught by Professor McGonagall for being out of bed after hours and, in the aftermath, is led to believe that Harry and Hermione have spread a false story about a dragon without caring to make sure that Neville knew the truth. Neville loses fifty points from Gryffindor for being out of bed and receives detention along with Harry, Hermione and Draco.

Discovered in chapter 16, Through the Trapdoor

The night that Harry, Ron and Hermione sneak out of Gryffindor Tower to attempt to save the Philosopher’s Stone, Neville tries to stop them from getting Gryffindor into further trouble. He stands in front of the portrait hole and puts up his fists, swearing to fight them to prevent them from leaving. Hermione casts Petrificus Totalus on him so that they can pass, leaving Neville almost completely immobile.

Discovered in chapter 17, The Man with Two Faces

At the end-of-year feast, Dumbledore awards Neville ten points for his bravery in his attempt to stop his friends. These points, the first Neville has ever gained for his house, secure the House Cup for Gryffindor. His fellow Gryffindors pile on top of him, cheering.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Discovered in chapter 6, Gilderoy Lockhart

When Professor Lockhart releases Cornish pixies in his classroom, two of them grab Neville and lift him into the air. Neville is left swinging from the candelabra in the ceiling until it gives way and he crashes to the floor.

Discovered in chapter 9, The Writing on the Wall

Neville listens attentively when Professor Binns recounts the legend of the Chamber of Secrets in the Gryffindor History of Magic class.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Discovered in chapter 5, The Dementor

Neville joins Harry, Ron and Hermione's compartment after the train stops and is plunged into darkness. After Professor Lupin has sent the Dementor away, a very pale Neville describes the horrible feeling of cold it gave him when it entered the compartment.

Discovered in chapter 6, Talons and Tea Leaves

Neville attends the Divination class with his fellow Gryffindors. He becomes increasingly nervous when Professor Trelawney addresses him: firstly to tell him that his grandmother might be unwell; and secondly to ask that he use a blue cup rather than pink after he has broken his first one, which he then does almost immediately. As he is leaving the classroom, Professor Trelawney tells him that he will be late to the next class, so he should work extra hard to catch up.

Discovered in chapter 7, The Boggart in the Wardrobe

As Professor Lupin ushers the Defense Against the Dark Arts class into the staff room, Neville is embarrassed by Professor Snape's snide remarks about his uselessness. However, he is asked by Lupin to be the first student to face the Boggart. When Neville admits his greatest fear is Professor Snape, Lupin tells him to picture the clothes his grandmother wears. He tells Neville that if the 'Riddikulus' charm works, and Neville pictures the clothes, the Boggart Snape will be forced into them. Neville faces the Boggart successfully, and is called on by Lupin at the end of the lesson to finish it off. He lets out a great 'Ha!' of laughter at the Boggart, and it explodes into a thousand tiny wisps of smoke. Neville is awarded ten points by Lupin for facing the Boggart twice.

Discovered in chapter 13, Gryffindor Versus Ravenclaw

Woken by the noise from Ron, Neville flees the dormitory to the common room with the other students. He trembles from head to toe as he admits to writing the week's passwords down, and then misplacing them. Neville is in disgrace after his blunder with the passwords. He is banned from all future Hogsmeade visits, given detention, and forbidden from having the password to Gryffindor Tower: he has to wait outside the common room every night until someone lets him in.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Discovered in chapter 11, Aboard the Hogwarts Express

Neville joins Harry, Ron and Hermione in their compartment on the Hogwarts Express. He listens jealously to his friends talk about the Quidditch World Cup, and tells them that his Gran refused to buy tickets, as she didn't want to go.

Discovered in chapter 12, The Triwizard Tournament

Neville tells Harry, Ron, Hermione and the twins that he definitely hasn't learnt enough at school to be able to be the Hogwarts Triwizard Tournament champion, but he expects his grandmother would want him to try to enter the Tournament, as she's always talking about how he should uphold the family honour. As they walk up to Gryffindor Tower, Neville's foot sinks through a trick step in the staircase, and he has to be pulled out by Harry and Ron

Discovered in chapter 13, Mad-Eye Moody

Neville receives a parcel at breakfast, which most likely contains something he forgot to pack.

Discovered in chapter 14, The Unforgivable Curses

Neville manages to melt his sixth cauldron in Potions class in the first weeks of school. He returns from the resulting detention with Snape in a state of nervous collapse, having been made to disembowl a barrelful of horned toads.

During the Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, Neville volunteers information about one of the Unforgivable Curses he has heard of: the Cruciatus Curse. Neville is deeply upset by Moody's demonstration of the Curse on the spider; his hands clench upon the desk in front of him, his knuckles white, his eyes wide and horrified.

Neville stands alone in a side passage after the Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, staring at the stone wall opposite him with the same horrified expression he wore during the demonstration of the Cruciatus Curse. He looks around when Hermione greets him; he gabbles in an unnaturally high voice about the lesson, making little sense. Neville is invited to Moody's office by the Professor for a cup of tea after the lesson; he looks even more frightened at the prospect, but neither moves nor speaks. He looks pleadingly at Harry, Ron and Hermione as Moody steers him away towards his office. Neville returns to the dormitory later, sitting on his bed reading a book. He tells Harry, Ron and Hermione that Moody lent him the book, Magical Mediterranean Water-Plants and Their Properties, a touch of pride in his voice as he tells them Professor Sprout praised his Herbology skills to Moody.

Neville lies awake in his bed that night, unable to sleep, the lack of snoring in the dormitory very telling.

Discovered in chapter 15, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang

Neville is placed under the Imperius Curse by Professor Moody during his Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. He performs a series of astonishing gymnastics under the influence of the curse, which he certainly would not have been capable of ordinarily.

Neville accidentally transplants his own ears onto a cactus during one particularly gruelling Transfiguration lesson.
